why is my backup assistant constantly trying to sync after factory reset?

I went through a factory reset process and made sure not to enable the backup assistant. However since then it is spending significant time trying to sync (looks like around 6 hours a day before I found out!). I have the sync icon up in the notification bar, and the phone's 'awake' time was over 6 hours even though I hadn't used the phone all day long. I had to go into the accounts & sync settings area and tell it to cancel sync to make the notification icon stop.

Why is it doing this when I don't have Backup Assistant enabled? (and the sync circle is also grayed out).

The sync icon in the notification bar is not exclusive to Backup Assistant - even with that disabled (which, from the sound of it, yours is) it will show up for other accounts you have listed under "Accounts & sync". The problem is figuring out what's getting stuck.

I have two Google accounts, Facebook for HTC Sense and Weather. Mine gets stuck every now and then and it's almost always a problem with Facebook.

ah, yes you are correct...i assumed it was the backup assistant because it was also showing up in my Running Services. But I do have other accounts which sync (google calendar, mail, contacts, weather, and 2 other email accounts).
