Welcome to Android Central! What do you mean by slowing down? Does it take a long time to open a photo, or advance to the next photo? Are the photos on Internal Storage or the microSD card?

If they're on the card, the card could be corrupt. Try a different one. If that doesn't help, then go to the App Manager, select Gallery, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. Open Gallery again, and wait for the database to repopulate (no photos will be deleted by doing this).
