Why is my HTC One M8 battery draining so fast?

AC Question

I've had my HTC One M8 for about one year now, and other than the fact that swype autocorrect is absolutely terrible and causes constant errors, it has mostly worked quite well. In particular the battery life seemed quite strong until recently.

I moved to France about a month ago and since then it cannot seem to hold it's charge for very long, a problem which seems to be getting worse and worse everyday. As of yesterday after charging to 100% overnight and with minimal use during the day it was completely drained by 5 pm. Today after charging and being unplugged at 8 am it was over halfway drained by 10:30 am. Looking at the power usage summary in Settings, I see nothing particularly out of the ordinary. My usage habits have not changed since moving, the only difference is using the different electrical outlets, but I know of no reason why that should have any effect on a moderately advanced appliance like a phone or computer.

Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome.

What is your signal strength? Check that by touching the battery usage graph to expand it. A poor signal makes a heavy demand on the battery.

As belodion is advising you check the signal strength. If that's not the culprit just install "All in One Tool Box" app and use it to close aplications running in the background and also clean tha cache.

I am also experiencing bad battery life but the problem started when Google and HTC rushed the Lollipop update, back in January. Used to have great battery life and no lag, since then battery lasts much lesser and I have occasional lag that goes away when I clean the recent apps. Did 2 factory resets, many cache cleaning and even tried a custom rom and kernel, to no avail, which makes me think that it´s mostly Google´s fault.
I still love the phone, never had one that I liked for such a long time and I dont feel any need to upgrade for the first time but I truly hope HTC fixes these problems with the Marshmallow update.

Cheers

My M8 started draining quicker after I installed the new Google search app. I then uninstalled the update and it went back to normal again.
Also make sure that GPS is off as that causes google play services to drain battery.

I'm running kit kat 4.4.4.at the moment

I had lollipop on my old m8 which was draining quicker and lagging.

Hopefully they sort this out in marshmallow but I doubt they will. As marshmallow is bringing in more features that will probably drain the battery.

I hope you're wrong... I thought about downgrading to kitkat but I need S-OFF for that. Even I knew what I know now I would also stay on KitKat, even knowing that I would lose the smartlock feature (I have a Moto 360) it was a perfect phone, now... Not so much. Still love it, though.
I considered buying the new Nexus 6P but it's too big, imo.

I hope I'm wrong too. I like kitkat but the only problem with it is it doesn't allow third party apps to write to the sd card. I don’t want to root either. I'm also fed up of every two days force stopping the lollipop update in notifications

Before I install marshmallow I must be sure that there's no bugs. Because HTCs track record of updates to the M8 are terrible. I don’t want a phone with bugs so probably I'll install marshmallow many months after it's released just to be safe.

Please HTC don't mess up my phone like you messed up my old m8 with lollipop.
