Why is my Huawei P20 Pro crashing on unlock?

[Android Central Question]

A little while ago my huawei p20 pro screen stopped working. No cracks, obvious physical damage or visible cause. In my hand as I was looking at it, it turned black and hasn't worked since then. I am still within my warranty period so before I send it off to be fixed I wanted to back up all my files since they wipe the phone.

I got a USB-C multi port hub with HDMI and USB inputs to try and get into my settings to enable USB debugging to transfer the files to my computer.

Connecting it to a TV I can see my lock screen, and confirmed that the touchscreen still works or I can use a USB mouse to attempt to unlock it. However once I 'swipe up to unlock' the screen cuts to black and returns me to the lockscreen after 10 or 20 seconds. Unlocking via fingerprint does the same. Booting up in safe mode yields the same results.

Any ideas on how to get around this?

Then maybe see if can try reinstall the firmware
