Why is my in-phone messaging app closing when I am actively messaging?

Basically, when I message someone using the in-phone messaging app (SMS/MMS), the app automatically goes back to the screen where it shows all the contacts I have messaged. It does this every time I send a message to someone. Is there any fix for this?

This happened after installing new updates.

Phone model: HTC One
Android version: 5.0.2
Software Number: 7.23.502.1

Sorry. The only other thing I can think of is a factory reset. The Lollipop update has been causing a ton of issues with a lot of devices. Most can be resolved by doing a factory reset. If you decide to go that route, be sure to back up all your photos and anything you don't want to lose.

In the factory reset, do all my apps get deleted as well? And about backing up, is there any reference that gives info on how to back up all my phone numbers, photos, etc?

Yes all your apps will be delete, it will be just like when you pulled the phone out of the box. You can download the HTC Sync software from HTC to back up most of your info. I personally would use Google Photos to back up my photos and keep them backed up automatically.
