Why is my keyboard not working?

On my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, my keyboard doesn't type. When I restart my phone, and unlock the screen the first time, I can type my messages on any app in the space selected. But as soon as I lock my screen and unlock it and go to type, the keyboard will show up but when I start tapping letters it won't show up in the typing space that is selected. I have had to keep restarting my phone to be able to send text messages to people. How can this be fixed?
