Is it running on battery or on charger? Can you boot into recovery mode? See this link for instruction on booting into recovery mode.

If you can boot into recover mode you might try wiping the cache partition which can take sometime so be patient. This will not wipe your data or apps, then boot system normally. It this does not solve the problem then you may want to boot recovery mode again and do a factory reset, this WILL however, wipe you data and app. But then again with a dead phone what else do you have to lose.

This has been happening with my phone as well. Sometimes it just reboots, and sometimes it's rebooting and then "optimizing" all of my apps, in the same way it happens when you get an OS update. This has been happening multiple times a day. I finally tried doing a factory reset and the issue persists, so I'm really at a loss with what to do at this point.

Editing to add that I'm on 5.1, but this started happening before I received the update.

Does the problem happen immediately after the reset? Or only after you get all your apps and services installed? I ask, because it could be related to a bad app or service installed on the phone. Reset the phone and format (clear) the SD card and see if that helps. Let us know how that goes.

Thanks for your reply. The problem happens at any time - in the middle of using an app, answering a call, while sitting idle in my pocket, and even during a reset it has reset again from the splash screen. I've already done a factory reset. As with all Nexus devices, there is no SD card.

I think you should think about replacing your smartphone

Yeah, I'm afraid that's where I am at this point. I spent last night removing all but my most heavily used apps and widgets, so the phone is clean as can be following the factory reset. I'm hoping that's good enough to last the next 2 weeks, until the new HTC One M9 and Galaxy S6 become widely available. Pretty sad about this, as the N5 is possibly my favorite phone I've ever owned, but it's also had the shortest lifespan of any phone I've ever owned (16 months).

Mate I had the exact same issue recently. I tried everything from factory resets to trying to boot in safe mode. My problem wasn't app or software related. My power button was getting stuck somehow. I solved this by taking the back cover off carefully and removing dust that had built up. A sewing needle did the trick. Once that's done lightly flick the power button and surrounding areas and it worked. I've not had the issue since. Hope this works for you ;)
