Why is my phone responding without me touching it?

So this thing started happening where buttons or apps started activating without me touching them. I first noticed it while using FB messenger. The back button, the multi app selection button, the pull down notification bar among others would activate without me touching them. I have an HTC ONE M9. Please help.

Try Safe Mode diagnostically. If still no go, get back to us.

Have you tried turning the phone off completely? Along with Safe Mode that would be the other obvious thing to try.

And while it's off go ahead and clean the screen, just in case you got something on there.
