why is my samsung A5 not backing up to google drive?

[Android Central Question]

I have a fairly new Samsung A5 running android nougat set up to do automatic backups to google drive. On the A5 under Backups>Google Account, it shows all my data as being synched regularly (i.e., synch calendar last synched 2017-12-15..., etc.) but when I look at the google drive app on the A5 or I log into google drive from my home computer there are no backups showing. Any ideas what is wrong?

Is it set to do it over Wi-Fi, and if so, do you use WiFi?

I have been almost continuously connected to wifi. I am certin if it is set to backup only when wifi is available.

I meant to write I am NOT certain if it is set to backup only when wifi is available. Where do I check that?
