Why is my Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 refusing to update software and open play stor

I formatted my Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 after it refused to update its software or even open play store

It's possible that's because it's running such an old version of Android that Google is no longer supporting the Play Services framework on that device.

There have been several versions of 10.1" tablets from Samsung, some still supported while others not.

Specifically, which model do you have? Do you know what version of Android it's running?

Welcome to Android Central! Update which software -- the system? If you're talking about the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which is 10 years old), it stopped getting system updates many many many many moons ago. In addition, the Android version it currently has is probably way out of date for the Play Store to even work. Get a more current device.
