Why is my tablet overheating and is it okay?

I just got home and my tablet was all the way off, But the thing hadn't been even touched for a couple hours and it was so hot it startled me when I touched it. Is it broken and why did it do this?

Welcome to Android Central! Which tablet? It may have been a malfunctioning app that was going haywire, causing the CPU to work overtime. Let it cool down, then charge it on a wall outlet for at least 4-6 hours. Then try powering on normally. If it turns back on, use it normally, but pay attention in the future if it seem to get unusually warm. If it does, go to the Settings>Battery menu and see if any app is using an unusually high percentage of battery.

It's hard to tell exactly what this means. Was it so hot it was hard to handle? Might also be a bad battery. I hate to be an alarmist, but I'd watch that tablet like a hawk if it was really unusually hot.
