Why is rear camera resolution on Galaxy Tab S2 only around 2 MP?

The camera setting shows the rear camera to have 8 MP res, but lately all the pics using it have been around 1.2 - 2 MP in size. Rear cam used to take pics with file sizes of 4-6 MP. Have tried resetting tablet settings and changing camera settings to no avail. Could it be a recent android update messing with the settings?
