Android L destroying my Nexus 5

Android L was shipped to my phone no more than a week ago (i.e. I didn't manually install it) to my 32g Nexus 5 and it has gone downhill, rapidly, from there.
1. The OS is raping my battery life. With KitKat, it was usually about 10% of total battery useage, but now it exceeds 40%! My battery life has probably halved!
2. SO MANY APPS LAG AND CRASH. VLC constantly crashes, and when trying to organise photos in the photo app, the device lagged, caused the screen to go black, became completely unresponsive, and I had to reboot the device.
3. Memory usage (according to CCleaner) averages at about 82% at rest whereas KitKat was about 48%.

What can I do, how can I downgrade to KitKat without losing my data?

Kind regards

Re: Android L destroying my Nexus 5

1. Have you tried clearing the cache partition? That sometimes helps.
2. No idea on that one.
3. Unused memory is wasted memory. Android automatically clears memory as its needed, so L is actually *better* at using your memory than KitKat was.
