Why is the gallery so slow?

For example, if I get a pic in email, I open it in the gallery and it takes like 5-20 seconds for it to open. If I use the built in camera, it also can react the same way.
Does anyone know if the gallery is improved with 2.2?

Are you connected on 3G/4G/or WiFi. Is the photo already downloaded to the phone or is it having to pull it down from the cloud?

photo is downloaded - or taken with the camera. just the process of gallery opening up and loading the pic takes forever

how many pictures and videos do you have? - I have about 10gb of pics and videos out of a 16gb card, and I noticed that when I changed it to a 16gb class 6 card if helps quite a bit - as the Epic comes with a 16gb class 2 card - class 6 can read and write faster and this phone in most cases seems to take advantage to the faster card .

Class 6 cards are the best even though a little more expensive, I think it worth it - also very handy if you sync your card or transfer files to your PC.

Actually, I find the new 'Gallery 3D' a tad slower when opening because it now has extra useless animations that I can't turn off in the leaked 2.2. I am hoping they have addressed this in the *official* version...

Is there an old style gallery available that will work on the Epic? Either in the market or yanked out of another phone? I'm not a big fan of the 3d gallery. I'm more of a "minimalist".

I have wondered this as well... I just don't see the point in useless animations that waste time.. I prefer function over pretty/cool...
