Why is there a one in Front of the Number I'm trying to texttrying to text

Why is the phone number I'm trying to reach has a one in front of it I cannot send a text with that number 1 in the front as it's adding 11 numbers instead of 10. How do I get rid of that 1?

Welcome to Android Central! +1 is the USA country code -- it shouldn't matter if it's there or not. Can you just start a new message thread by entering the 10 digit number without the leading 1?

Also if they texted you first and the message arrived with a prefix it should send with one as well.

The question that should be most helpful is what happens when you attempt to text them? That will tell us a lot and could lead to a different answer.

Should we assume that you are not from the US, as it would be odd for you not to know what that prefix was or what it means?
