What is this and why is it burning up my battery time. I'm not listening to media of any kind.

Twice since I got phone. Still see this wake lock media server on all night long with screen off. I don't even know what media server is.

This is a known problem on other Galaxy devices.

First thing, try to remove the sd card and see if you still have the problem. It could also be an issue with media on the internal sd. You can try another sd card (non Sandisk), try Samsung or something to see if problem is resolved if it is an sd card issue. Also remove and reinstall all media might do the trick.

Here is more discussion on your problem

Thanks. It's funny how people try various things, think it's cured, only to find the problem returns. I liked ice cream sandwich better than Jelly Bean in so many ways. If this problem goes all the way back to gn3 I don't see much chance it will ever be solved. I tried copying my sd card on computer then letting phone wipe it and reformat it then copied back files. I find it unlikely that a top quality (mine cost a fortune) SanDisk sd card is the culprit but I'll eventually try replacing it. I did forget to have windows convert mp3 to mp4 during copy process because it takes so long but that would be the next thing. I also found that I cannot delete files on sd card from computer, only from phone. No biggie but odd.

So far the index service and media server are not running. (Fingers crossed)

Waste. As soon as I did a restart index service came on. I think gem blitz may be turning on media server because when I stopped it media server stopped. Either way reformatting the sd card didn't accomplish any5hing.
