Why isn't any of my mail displaying in my Gmail app?

getting email with the gmail app

When I download my emails on my phone nothing displays on the screen but my inbox tells me how many emails I have, can anyone tell me why

Welcome to Android Central! Which device do you have? So to be clear--you're only using the Gmail app, right? Where is the inbox telling you how many emails you have--within the Gmail app? And are you saying that when you select your Inbox in the Gmail app, nothing shows up?

Try going to Settings>Apps>All, select Gmail, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. Now open it again, let it sync, and see if it works.

I have the same problem and it didn't work. I have Lollipop on Nexus 4
