Why isn't my memory card showing all available space on my Galaxy S4?

Just recently got this phone. I have put in a 32Gb memory card and when I check to see how much space there is on it ....it says 29 something Gb which is fine. Yet when I try to do an app backup, it says there is only some 7Gb of free space. I have wiped and formatted the card and still no difference. Can anyone help ?

Welcome to Android Central! What app are you using to do a backup? Are you sure that app is using the external SD card, or the internal storage (sometimes called Internal SD)?
