Why root, what ROM, and why?

Ok, now that I've settled in with the Evo for good, I want to know if it really is worth rooting, what ROM would probably be the best, and why it is the best. So, I will ask the ROM experts here to help me! :)

It's worth it if you want to try things that HTC/Sprint doesn't give you out of the box. If you want to try themes, or see how fast your phone really can be, then you need to root.

Right now I'm running Myn twopointtwo and it's awesome. I've tried AC ROM and a few others, too. There's a lot out there.

I still think everyone should be required to try CM6 too.

Rooting opens up a lot of extra stuff you can do with your phone. Even just being able to do a nand backup of your phone is worth it.

Not to mention the cool roms, apps, and customization you can do.

I prefer the following ROM:
[ROM] VaelPak 2.2 [9/27/10] - NonSense - [HTC#11][FPSU] - 3.29.651.5 OTA - xda-developers

It is very fast, great battery life, and while not drastically different it has a great look and feel graphically.

When I first got my EVO I said I was never going to root it. Now I never want it any other way.

If you want the best Sense rom, it's hands down Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo

If you want a non Sense rom I'd say VaelPak. I've been running the VaelPak roms for a while now. I love it. I like that he takes small steps in every update because it keeps things very very stable and it allows him to catch any issues from one update to the next that might happen a lot easier. The next few updates should start adding some flair to it. I've tried other non Sense roms but non has been as stable and overall just good as much as VaelPak imo. The other great thing about VaelPak is the developer support. It's second to non in my opinion. Not only is he REALLY quick at helping solve any issues you may have, but he helps with issues that don't even have to do wit his rom all the time. He actually has his own forum dedicated for his rom http://vaelek.com/ I say try them both out!

First of all dont do the unrevoked for root, be smart and use the sticky so you will have basic adb knowledge.

Secondly, rooting allows for a faster and smoother phone while improving battery life. Besides all the stuff you can do visually, which really makes your phone awesome.

and thirdly, id start off with a basic rom like the AC-rom, its fast stable and easy on the battery, but you will want to get more adventurous eventually. When that time comes around you will know enough to get yourself rolling and id bet cyanogen will somehow find a way onto your phone haha.

a Few must have root apps are:

ROM manager
root explorer
SetCPU
and wireless tether

They are worth the money or donation to support the developer. A+++++ Apps.

I'll see you in LJ's root sticky! ;)

Root so you can take advantage of some apps like Titanium back up, Wifi tethering, apps2sd, to name a few. You can still keep everything stock if you wish. However some custom roms remove bloatware so you have more room to install other apps. I use Baked Snack 1.7. www.bakedsnackshack.com

Myn's rom w/ the Kingx kernel #10 bfs destroys my battery life. Wonder what's up. Is cfs any better? I'm going to try slingbox's combo right now.

csf versions have fps unlocked thus more battery is being spent.
With Netarchys 4.1.9 cfs battery life is amazing = to his bfs version Ive found using Fresh 3.3.
10 hr device in sleep went from 100% to 92% which is pretty amazing.
From that point 7am hardcore used all day - Hours 1/2 in calls , lots of Gtalk , email ,app installs , browsing , 3rd party app play & was left with 30% at 7pm.
