Why should I use Google Voice?

I've actually had a Google Voice account for a while now - a friend sent me a beta invite a long time ago. Anyway - I never used it AT ALL on my iPhone.

Now that I've switched to Android - I'm wondering if I should make use of it or not.

If you currently use Google Voice - can you tell me a few things you like about it?

My situation is relatively simple - I have my cell phone and a home phone. I mostly use my cell for a handful of friends and family - and my wife and I text a very moderate amount (never went over our 250 messages/month before).

So should I try to start using Google Voice - or just keep plugging along as I have been? I suppose if the texting is truely free - that'd allow my wife and I to drop our 250 txt's a month deal with Verizon - saving us $10/mo. total.

Thanks for any replies.

1. Free text messages..

2. You can talk about underhanded activity with business partners and it's kept away from prying eyes who check text messages at your company?

3. you give the # to girls who you think are fugs or future psychos.. they don't have your true phone #.

4. Rinse and repeat steps 1-3

EDIT:

5: If you don't care about your phone # and swap carriers often, you can give everyone your GV # and no matter what phone/carrier you're on, people can sms/call you without any issues.

Google Voice is awesome when you give your number to businesses that sell your number like banks. Once they call you, you can blakclist the number and that same 800 number or any telemarking number will never get by again. Best is that they will NEVER have your real number. I LOVE GOOGLE VOICE!!

Good points already made in here but do know this about GV. ITS NOT VOiP!!! Whenever you make a GV call from your phone, Google routes the calls through a landline first so if your carrier is Sprint (I don't know about the others), your call will come out of your minutes!

I didn't know this until I checked my usage and found out I used 170 minutes only 4 days after having my EVO. I just said screw that and gave out my real number because I only have the 450 minute plan (I don't call landlines enough to get a higher minute plan).

Texting is free in any case though! If you wanted to use it for texting ONLY, you would have to tell whoever you gave the number to, to text you ONLY at that number.

I only use it for the voice mail service on my "real" phone #. I like the email style for voice mail.

I also use it for voicemail. They are saved forever and will never go away in case I need to reference one.

Its also come in handy if my phone has been on the blink and I need to let people know. (you can log on on any computer and send texts or make calls with a headset)
