Why the sudden shift from the 5x to 6p

Based on the leaks I was all set to order a 5x. Then the actual announcement came.

- Older, not as powerful processor. "Okay, that's not terrible."
- Neutered Camera "Okay, Camera function is important but has never been paramount in my decision."
- Plastic compared to 6p aluminum design "Plastic phones don't turn me off, not a big deal... but damn the 6p is sexy"
- Max storage of 32gb "Okay, that's not bad. on my current phone I'm using almost 32gb, but man it would be nice to be future proofed.... ah, 6p would let me get 64gb."
- Single front facing speaker. "ohhh.... nope. Nope nope nope. That isn't going to go over well."

and, because I'm a nerd:

- 2gb ddr3 RAM "2gb is enough for a phone... but the 6p is using DDR4 with MORE ram...."

So now I am trying to convince myself that the mammoth 6p is the phone for me. I know a couple people with an iPhone 6 plus so I'm going to steal it for a couple hours and walk around with it, because honestly if it weren't for the fact that it is so massive I would have pulled the trigger already.

I've been blown away by the 6p from the moment leaks started coming through. I knew this would be my first nexus, having always wanted one. For me, it's the build, specs, and Huawei being a new US brand, just all around something different. After owning every Sammy phone, and some tablets, since the S3, I'm tired of touchwiz, slow updates, and Verizon interference. I can't hardly wait!

The first gen Moto X proved to me that specs don't really matter.

Even with the 6P available, the 5X is going to be one heck of a device.

Very good point, the screen was just too small for me before the MXPE. I have no problem recommending moto and I even have been pushing friends to the moto g and moto e because I know they don't need the specs and they fit their size preferences.

For me, the 5x specs were a little underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, the specs aren't bad, the 6p just blew the 5x out of the water. I think if the 5x were priced at $299, it would make the decision between the two harder. But for $499, the 6p is a great buy.

I'm sad the 6p screen is smaller than the N6. I was hoping for a bigger screen or same size. Phone still looks nice though, just waiting on my 64 GB graphite shipping notice..... Can't come soon enough, I already ordered my spare USB-C cables for my car charger, and work charger. Just need the damn phone lol!

I think a lot of market research has indicated the 5.9" is as big or too big for the typical buyer.

Damn people with small hands! You get used to the size, when I had to RMA my N6 for power button issues, I used my N5 for a week or so. I don't know how people use a screen so small. Trying to watch videos and just do anything is just annoying on a small screen.

I don't think its about small hands, its about the content you use with your phone. If you watch lots of videos and play lots of games, it makes sense to have bigger screens. For lots of people, they simply use their phones as a phone and texting first, then audio content / social stuff, and last some games or videos. Using it this way makes a larger phone just cumbersome and the larger screen size not as ideal.

Well... it think they went to 5.7" for one simple reason; price. We already know that the screen is made by Samsung... and going off some of the comments made by Google people and reading between the lines, this isn't just a Samsung screen, it's most likely a screen from either the Note 4 or the Note 5... Taking an existing screen means a cheaper unit price since there's no R&D and testing that's needed.

As for which one it is... not sure yet... everyone is kind of vague. Either way, it's an excellent screen.

I wouldn't worry too much about the difference. .3" diagonally isn't that big a drop.

Yea that's what I was thinking, the .3" thing might not be that big a deal. That's why I pre-ordered day 1. It looks good, can't wait to get it in hand, should be here sometime between Oct 30 and Nov 2.

Yeah, honestly it was a good move making it practically the same dimensions as the iPhone 6 Plus. for me, the Nexus 6 was a little too big for my liking, but the narrower 6p seems its going to be just fine, and i feel I have a good idea of that because Ive held a 6 plus.

It just felt like the Nexus 6 was such a huge size difference from the Nexus 5 and I wasn't ready for that big of a jump yet.

Yup I understand that way of thinking too. The 6p is going to take some getting used to for me, but I feel like it won't be too bad

Because its slightly better than the nexus 5.. Not a big upgrade for most nexus users so most will take a bigger screen. With better specs. Even if they don't want a big screen

The 5X gives people exactly what they wanted : an updated 5" Nexus 5 that didn't break the bank. On its own, it isn't all that exciting, but it is what it is.

There will be plenty of people who buy, and really like, the 5X.

I think the 5X is a fine device. If that were the only Nexus offered this year, I'd probably buy one. I've been sold on the Huawei Nexus for a while, but I don't get the disappointment at the 5X's specs. The only bummer I got from the listing was the single speaker. The 2GB of RAM thing is totally overblown. The N5 runs Marshmallow like a champ with 2GB of RAM and a much older processor. The 5X will do just fine in real life, and I think once it's released the Internet community will see that.

I agree. Unless you're one of the world's heaviest users, 2gb ram is just fine. Plus, android frees up ram as needed. I don't see the big deal. Sure, there will come a day when 2gb will be marginal, but we're not near that point yet. After opening up 30 apps consecutively, I was only using 1.8gb and was able to fly around my phone no problems. People need to calm down about the ram thing.

That being said, I would prefer the N6p. Bigger, better screen, and I just love having something 'better'. Not that I'm going to get the N6p, as I'm very happy with the 'old' Nexus 6. For that matter, the old Nexus 5 could probably take care of my needs just fine. But my N5 died, so I went and got the N6.

But at least it has a better camera for all of the 'pro' photographers out there. I'm sure the N5x will sell OK, but I have a feeling that the N6p will do a bit better. Hey, whatever people get is OK. It's a Nexus, and it will rock.
