Why was the X8 architecture abandoned?

Why did Motorola stopped using the X8 architecture in the Moto X 2013? Originally they said that there was little savings over a quad core CPU.

Perhaps, they realized that lollipop posed an issue which caused them to abandon this technology.

Am I going out on a limb here?

What do you mean? Why they stopped using a custom SoC for the 2014 model coming from the 2013?
The modified S4 Pro they used in the X8 didn't support always listening, so they added extra "cores" to add that functionality. The 801 has it already, so they didn't need to use any custom architecture

I believe they still used some custom architecture. Probably just following the trend and knowing most people look at specs.
