You know the little bluish-grey line under the title of the app. It gets to about 50-60% and the thing in the notification bar disappears and the app will just stop downloading.

Try going to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store, tap "Clear cache", then tap "Force stop". Reboot your tablet. Open the store and try to download the app again.
If it still doesn't work, do the same thing again, but also tap "Clear data" on the app before you tap "Force stop".
