why won't my LG G3 recognize my new SD card so i can back up and reset

my LG G3 won't update apps or let me download new ones. Was told i needed to reset but i want to back up some text messages. Installed new SD card, went to backup and reset, but it shows, SD card unmounted or not present.

Try a different sd card. I have had a couple that stopped working for no reason other than getting old or they were defective
