Why won't my S4 read my sim card?

why wont my s4 read my sim card?

I bought an s4 recently off someone and it wouldn't read my iphone 4 sim card. Both my sisters have iphone 4's as well and both their sim cards worked on it. I just bought a new sim card and it still doesn't read it. It says " no sim card emergency calls only" and it shows signal bars.

There are different reasons it won't work, first could be a carrier lock is still in place on the phone, could be it doesn't support your carriers SIM. What network is it for and what are you trying to add it to? Also did the seller show you it worked before taking their SIM out and doing a factory reset?
