Maybe you have smart stay on? Which it won't turn off until you stop looking at it, even if you're not doing anything.

I dont have any of the new gesture features etc. on as it would drain my battery. (Talking about that, up to this day, my s4 hasnt gone more than a day without needing charge and I remember reading somewhere it had looong battery life)
