Hello folks. I've tried to find a simple, clear-cut answer for this but I keep getting confused about "Project Fi" talk/lingo/jargon blah, blah, blah.

I currently have a iPhone 6 Plus that I am using on T-Mobile and have Wi-Fi calling on it. There is an option in the iPhone under "Settings" --> "Phone" and to turn "Wi-Fi Calling" off/on. It works great and the iPhone 6/6 Plus is the first iPhone model that T-Mobile offered that has Wi-Fi Calling on it ... the iPhone 5s with T-Mobile didn't offer it for example.

If I get the Nexus 6p and pop in my nano-sim card from the iPhone 6 Plus into the Nexus 6p ... will Wi-Fi calling work straight out the box?

Simply Google "wifi calling t-mobile nexus 6p" and you'll have the answer right there:

"Today Google finally made its Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P officially official, and the question on the minds of many T-Mobile customers was “Does this support T-Mobile’s band 12 and VoLTE?” Now it looks like we’ve got an answer.

In response to a question on Twitter, T-Mobile’s support team says that neither the Nexus 5X nor the Nexus 6P will support band 12, but that T-Mo is working to enable the feature. Meanwhile, Wi-Fi Calling won’t be turned on by default, but you can enable the feature when you connect one of the new Nexuses to T-Mobile’s network."

I'm more interested to see if Wifi calling for AT&T works on this phone as for now it's just enabled on 4 iPhones and that's it.

They use RTT and not TTY so that difference is important I imagine.

So by "connect one of the new Nexuses to T-Mobile's network" ... you mean once I get either the 5X or the 6P ... all I have to do is pop in my T-Mobile branded nano-sim into the device, go into setting on either the 5X/6P and "enable" Wi-Fi calling feature on it?

Also; what is Band 12 exactly? Does my iPhone 6 that I'm currently using on T-Mobile support Band 12?

Band 12 is just a new wireless frequency that T-Mobile is rolling out nationwide. It is in the 700MHz range and should allow for greater range and building penatration. The spectrum opened up when TV moved from analog to digital, and T-Mobile bought it up... but it took a bit to roll out nationally as there were some UHF TV stations that had to finalize their conversion. It augments T-Mobile's main band, band 4. In some situations, phones that support 12 will switch from 4 to 12 to improve the connection... say if you are out in the middle of nowhere and the band 4 signal starts to fade.... or inside a building, where band 4 doesn't penatrate walls as well as 12.

I'm looking at it appears that the iPhone 6 doesn't support band 12. They added support with the 6S. The 6P and 5X support band 12... it is just a matter of T-Mobile qualifying the two phones.

As for WiFi Calling.... 6.0 has WiFi Calling built in as natively supported, so the 6P and 5X support it. I am sure T-Mobile will have to qualify the two phones for it.

I was at my local Tmo store yesterday switching back to them from (evil, hateul) Cricket, and the store manager stated that the 5x and 6p (and even 6 with the update to Marshmallow) have wifi calling on Tmo. But, sadly, the original Nexus 5 does not, even with Marshmallow. There you go, straight from a Tmo store manager. My 6p arrives in about a week and a half (or sooner) and I will be able to verify then.

True the Nexus 5 does not have WiFi calling. I think the 5X and 6P need to download a small OS patch to enable it. That's why you have to put an activated T-Mobile SIM in it to enable it.
Don't believe everything (anything?) a store manager tells you. They are often clueless.

Why not call using Hangouts? Always works on WiFi.
It's not the same as T-Mobile's WiFi calling. You have to use the Hangouts Dialer and it's not totally seamless to use. With T-Mobile's system you use the phone exactly the same as for any other call, and if you leave WiFi range while talking the call is seamlessly handed off to the cellphone system.

I have a Nexus 5X on Tmobile, and yes I can confirm that it has wifi calling. Should be the same for the 6P. Simple enough? haha.

Err...have they improved tmobile's wifi calling a lot recently or was my HTC one m8 just terrible at it then? It was neevvverrr seamless for me, and I have really fantastic wifi in my house. Call quality was generally bad, lots of gargled sounds, occasionally phone would decide to switch from wifi to cellular for no reason and the call would completely drop, if I was outside and wifi range was low, my phone would keep just trying to call unsuccessfully instead of deciding to use the mobile network, etc etc. If it's been improved then I would looooove to use it on the 6P, but it left a real sour taste in my mouth from my several months of keeping it on :/

My wife and I both have Nexus 6's and WiFi calling on both really works well. So well that neither of us even give it a thought. But we have kick-*** Google Fiber WiFi too. I wouldn't want to speculate on why it works poorly for you. Several possibilities.

Android since v1.0. Linux user since 2001.

A general comment on Tmo, since I just switched back Friday afternoon. I left Tmo a year ago because the bad reception here in Cincinnati was making it difficult for me in many work situations where I had to have cell phone telephone discussions. Over the last year Tmo has rolled out new bands (not sure which ones) which now provide much better coverage than previously and supposedly pretty much blanket the metro area here. This coverage rollout is supposed to be complete by the end of this year (google Tmobile coverage map end of 2015).

While I haven't had a chance to try it out at work yet, as I switched over our accounts Friday afternoon on the way home from work, I can say the coverage is hugely improved. I was able to make about 4 calls to my wife while doing the grocery shopping at my local Kroger yesterday, with no call drops or pops or anything, even from the very back of the store. Previously on Tmo I would have to call her from the front of the store by the windows to hope to get a call through, and anywhere else in the store I had no signal. This is on the same phone (Nexus 5) I had before.

I know this doesn't say anything about the wifi feature but at least you may not need to use the wifi as often. Tmo really seems to be getting their crap together, which I am happy about because they have wonderful customer service. And the $120 monthly plan for 4-lines with 10GB each is certainly nice. Keeping fingers crossed for the wifi calling!

  1. Pop in a T-Mobile SIM card
  2. Go into the network settings and enable Wifi calling
  3. Use wifi to make and receive calls
  4. ???
  5. Profit.

Jerry I will be forever grateful if you can tell me if texts will send when wifi calling is enabled? On my htc one m8 it was hit or miss (say 50% of texts sent on time and some never at all), and mms didn't work at all unless using htc's stock messenger (which again was still pretty spotty).

I think I should mention this weird thing with my 6P...

My carrier doesn't support Wi-Fi calling (it's a local one that is basically T-Mobile's bands) and the setting shows up nowhere, but if I do a search of my system settings for "call" one of the options us Wi-Fi calling. I can enable it, but as soon as I get out of the settings it's disabled.
