Wicked Sensations Modem question and the ##72786# trick

Last month when I updated to the newest version of the WS rom, I noticed that my data connection sucked. Maybe it sucked before I updated, not sure, but I used to get 4G in a lot of places. Now, not so much.
It may be a coincidence, who knows. But my question is about the "modems" in the Kuban. There are several different versions, my question is why? Is 1 better than the other?
Do they improve reception or something?
And on a related note, I tried the ##72786# trick. Soon after it rebooted and went through all the hooplah that came with that, I started getting text messages from 8737, with a bunch of garbled numbers and letters. What's up with that?

Different modems work better for some than others. Depending both on your phone and location. Try them out and see what works best for you.

I don't do tricks so I can't help you there...
