WiFi and Wireless Tether issue

I'm having an odd problem with WiFi and wireless tether. It works great - once. But if I stop it and then try to restart it later, it either doesn't work (wireless tether) or works inconsistently (WiFi). But if I restart the phone, it all works fine again. Anyone else experienced something like this and know any work-arounds or fixes? It's not a huge issue as I try to restart my phone every morning, but still, would be nice to get it resolved! Thanks!

I wonder if it would be more consistent if your phone weren't rooted (per signature).

I have no idea, but the rooting is what allows me to have the unlimited wireless tether (w/o root I'm limited to 500MB/mo). Even then, seems like there would be some sort of work-around or fix. And I don't have any different ROM yet - just the stock until I see a reason to change.
