I know many rooted individuals are using WiFi hotspot for free now - will you need to root again (when available) after the Froyo update to use the hotspot free again?

When you use the WiFi hotspot, are you only able to broadacast in 4g or can you share your 3g connection too?

When you root with Unrevoked, you can UNroot by uninstalling the app, right?

I have the Unrevoked app on my phone but it's a .tar (I think) extension and I don't know what to do with it! Of course, now I'm going to wait until after the Froyo update to root if I get myself better understanding all this crap.

Thanks gang, I can't seem to get clear on this.

I think the source of confusion is the 6/28 OTA update. This sorta changed things around.

Prior to the 6/28 OTA update, unrEVOked was installed as an apk and acted as a temporary root. If you have this version, restart the phone, and root is gone... life is good.

After the OTA update (version 1.47.xxxx) the previous method of unrEVOked no longer worked. unrEVOkedv3 (available from the website) perma roots the phone. Unrooting the after this method requires going back to the stock RUU. http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-roms-hacks/19278-how-unroot-return-stock.html

So, basically, if you have version 1.47.651.1 (meaning the 6/28 OTA update) you can no longer use the first unrEVOked. The methods of rooting with this verison are 1) unrEVOkedv3, 2) simpleroot (in the sub-forums here, thanks to some xda folks) or 3) a long and manual process

I would suggest waiting until after froyo.... I mean, it's only a few days away, take the OTA froyo update and then look to root afterwards. I don't know what that tarball file on your phone is, but if you have 1.47.651.1, delete the file, go to www.unrevoked.com and click the Evo and check out those directions. It can be a little daunting--especially on the pc with the driver install, but it's not too bad.

About the Wifi tether app, it's pretty cool--definitely better than other apps I've seen on the Palm or other platforms. Yes, it will share your 4G or 3G connection with clients connected via WiFi. And yes, some form of root is probably going to be required after 2.2 as well.
