I know someone who's S2 works fine here at home but now that she has traveled abroad the phone does connect to the public Wifi hotspot but it can't browse or get e-mail. It said server failure or something like that. What could be the problem?

Sometimes with public hotspots you have to sign in or acknowledge terms of service. Typically opening the browser will bring them to the proper page. In this case, I ma not sure of a fix other than an error in the page she is trying to access.
