Wifi-only Droid 2?

OK, I'm wondering if anyone knows how to work around this. A few months ago I went from a D2 to a D4. After transferring the phone number to the D4 the D2 still worked in wifi-only mode. I couldn't place or receive calls on it, but it could still sync with email, hit the web, etc, so long as I was using a wifi connection. I put the D2 in a drawer and forgot about it.

Flash forward a couple months and now I need a device to test certain pieces of smartphone functionality. All I need is a wifi-only smartphone, but my D2 was loaded with all sorts of data and sync accounts that I didn't want on it anymore (this device will be used by several coworkers during testing and I don't want them getting into my email). So I did a factory reset from the menu and told it to wipe the SD card as well. All seemed to work as expected, except that when it rebooted it now wants to do the initial setup and phone activation again. I don't want to activate the phone, I just want it wifi-only. Is there any way to bypass the activation process? I can't seem to find one.

just stick your sim in to get by the activation part, then pull it again without setting up any accounts

Not sure if it will work on the D2, but I have an OG Droid that I still play with wifi only. When I turn it on and the activation screen comes up I just hit the home button and it bypasses it.

If it insists on a g mail acount to start up just do what I did and make a g mail addy just for that phone.

Hitting the home button does nothing, and the Droid 2 doesn't have a SIM.

Sorry,I didn't get what you were saying. My og Droid did require a g mail addy to boot up. I just made up an addy just for that phone. The home button just let's me skip the step of Verizon wanting to activate it.

Yeah, I can setup a gmail account if I need to, but until I get past the Verizon activation crap then I don't even have the option.

Nope. Verizon's 3G network is CDMA, not GSM, hence they don't use SIMs. Your D2G has a SIM because it's a "global" or "world phone", ergo it has a GSM radio and requires the use of a GSM SIM. However, that SIM has absolutely nothing to do with how the phone functions here in the US. My wife's D3 is the same way.

Now with LTE it's a different story, as LTE devices DO require a SIM. But then the D2 is CDMA-only, so no SIM.

All AT&T and T-Mobile phones have SIMs because they are GSM. Sprint's CDMA phones do not (unless they are also a "global" phone), though I assume that their LTE phones do. I have no idea about WiMax.

I'm in the same situation. Tapping the four corners didn't work for me. What was on the screen when you tapped the four corners?

Update: Never mind. I found the secret. Must tap the corners clockwise starting with the upper left.

I selected Wi-Fi, signed into my network, I get the Wi-Fi symbol but no access to the internet via the browsers.

Did a restart and factory reset. I haven't taken the time to war drive my neighborhood looking for an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Nothing is working.

Touching corners does nothing for me. Any other way to use the droid 2 in wireless only mode?
