It appears that 4G is always connected with this phone so do you save battery life with Wifi or are we better off shutting it off since 4G is connected anyway?

WiFi is easier on the phone. If you are on a tiered data plan, it is probably best to do this anyway.

When you're connected to WiFi, that's where the data is coming from. The fact that the "4G" shows up in the status bar doesn't mean it's using 4G.

I understand where traffic is passing. That bring said if you're connected I was wondering if it would save more battery having Wifi turned off all together. Two connections with 1 active vs 1 active. My feeling is Wifi would still be a bit less but I'm going to test it a bit regardless.

I've wondered if turning off 4G when connected to WiFi would save any battery?

You may want check out an app called Juice Defender. It will intelligently handle disabling/enabling radios for you and could net you some extra battery life
