Does this happen to you?

Settings - > Wifi

You get the list of available networks. Look below the green ON button and above your first network: Does the word "Scanning" come up every few seconds over and over?

Seems redundant with the Scan button on the bottom of the same screen. I wonder if it performs this even when you're not looking at it and if it affects battery life.

Yes if you have wi-fi on when your not on a network it will keep looking every few seconds. All phones do this .. that's why if you leave it on and walk near your house or a saved network you have you'll notice your phone is automatically connected since it keeps looking and spots it.

Yeah, it's searching even when I'm connected to a wifi network though with full strength.

I much prefer the phone trusting me to press the Scan button if I want to find a different network while connected to a perfectly good one. This is scanning every few seconds ago over and over connected or not.

When you're locked on Wi-Fi, the phone doesn't scan.

But...

When you open the Wi-Fi Settings menu, it scans because it figures you want to connect to a different network.

This is a handy feature. Here's why:

I constantly connect between Wi-Fi in the conference room at work, and a different network at my desk. But BOTH networks have good signal strength in both spots.

So when I open the Wi-Fi Settings menu, the phone scans to show me the networks available. Then I switch.

Doesn't do it when you're not in the Wi-Fi Settings menu.
