WiFi tether and remove Swype

I wanted to try WiFi tethering and to remove my preinstalled version of Swype.
I rooted my Droid X using Pete's Motorola Root tools, installed Open Garden WiFi and once connected to my laptop I get a Verizon sign up page for tethering. It did the same thing when I tried to connect with my Easy Tether. What is going on with that?

So I unrooted my phone so I could get back on the internet with my laptop.

The root tools program couldnt find my phone at first but after a day of trying it finally found my phone. Now it cant find it again so i can try to remove Swype.

All the threads are several months old and I dont feel they address my situation. I would like clearer more basic instruction on accomplishing my goals.
