Wifi won't connect unless phone is rebooted

This problem cropped up a couple months ago or so.

When I try to connect to Wifi, it usually will SAY it's connected (has the icon on the top bar) to a wifi network but I will have no internet.

For example, if I am outside wifi range (say, on 3G) and move within wifi range the phone will "connect" to wifi but I will no longer have internet.

If Wifi is disabled in settings, and I enable it, Wifi will say it's "connected" but I will have no data connection.

The only way to get wifi is to shut the phone off and turn it back on. For whatever reason, if it ONLY connects to Wifi from startup, it almost always work. This problem happens with all the wifi networks I've used.

It seems to be something about going from 3G to Wifi that gives problems.

Has anyone else had this problem or know what I could do to fix it?

The phone is rooted and I have Super User Permission. I think this started happening when I was trying to get a leaked version of froyo onto it (it still has eclair, I think). I have since reinstalled everything myself with no luck. The guys at the AT&T repair center reset the whole phone took everything off but Super user permission it seemed) but still has the same problem.

if you're sure that the problems correlate to the attempt to modify the phone, I'd suggest a bad ROM flash?

You could check over at XDA for replacing the modem, make sure that you get the correct (Eclair, if I read properly) version.

Before that, I'd check to see whether anything changed on the router / wifi you're attempting to connect to.

I'd also try to connect somewhere else (Starbucks), to see if the same thing happens there too.

I'll look at XDA, maybe make a post there. I obviously didn't really know what I was doing when I was trying to upgrade to froyo before, so I want to try and not break anything else. It seems strange to me that a bad ROM flash only affects wifi connectivity.

nothing has changed on the router/modem

This happens with all wifi networks I've connected to. I've tried four different networks, all result in same problem. Haven't tried Starbucks specifically though.

Hi,

I only suggested Starbucks, 'cos everyone's got one fairly close it seems, and they have open WiFi. Not worth it if you've tried on 4 routers already, with the same results.

I don't know why, but one of the symptoms (or so it seems over at XDA) of a bad flash is modem problems- either 3G, or WiFi connectivity. For most people, a reflash fixes it.
