Android Central Question
According to what I've read the Moto G5s plus has 4G LTE capability. Most carriers (and other sources) acknowledge that phones with 4g LTE capability will continue to work on 5g networks "for some time" (as in years). Those phones will not (understandably) have 5g capability but will nonetheless continue to work.
I think maybe AT&T is just trying to push new phones and is stretching the truth a bit.
