Will htc one m8 update w/o a SIM card?

Hello I just purchased a htc one and am currently waiting to activate it until my iPhone's plan runs out and was noticing that I cannot update from Kit Kat 4.4.2 to 4.4.4. As I said before I have not activated the phone with verizon yet and there is no sim in it. Sorry for such a noob question but I've been an iPhone user and this is my first droid. Thanks for all your help.

If it's not activated, Verizon doesn't have it on its list of handsets to be sent an update.

Thanks for the reply rukbat… so I take it on android devices, the updates are handset/carrier based rather than apples' just handset regardless of carrier? I appreciate the information and I look forward to 5.0 lollipop although it looks like a verizon htc one hasn't recieved it yet
