I seem to remember reading that Chromecast now supports live streams, so I wondered if I will be able to watch the I/O Keynote livestream on my Chromecast?

I'm not sure if you can. I haven't heard anything about it.

I watched the keynote by streaming the live youtube stream through my chromecast.

You needed to have the chrome browser with the chrome cast extension. Then you can cast any page via your chrome browser on your computer.
