Will manipulating system files not allow OTA update?

I know were a long way off from Gingerbread or the next OS but I just want to be ready when that time comes.

So I'm rooted and installed the new Swype beta last night. I needed to access the system folder and remove the Swype that came pre installed (it sucked). I know in order to receive OTA updates I need to be unrooted but if I leave for example the new swype beta installed will it not allow me to get an OTA update? Do I need to reinstall the system files that originally came with the device?

I just wish there was a stock system image that I could reinstall and restore my device back to "new" condition and not worry about this issue.

I know there will be rooted updates but the lack of a recovery image (Amon Ra, Clockwork) for the Atrix at this point make it hard for nandroid backups at the moment. TIA.

I thought they said they have a copy of the Stock Image? Wasnt that on Android Centrals front page a couple days ago? I still believe if you deleted swype, you can still get the OTA update from Motorola. Dont quote me, I could be wrong.

an sbf leaked out, but i dont know if its has been proven to be 100% reliable yet (i think we are waiting for the updated version of RSD Lite to be released). that said, if this is going to end up being anything like the droid x, you will need all your original system filed installed to receive any OTA updates. i dont think having the swype beta is the same as the pre-installed swype, unless it was installed as a system app, and even then im not sure if that will work.

a quick reminder, especially to all new android users that have entered the wonderful world of rooting: save yourself some headaches down the road and DONT DELETE any of the bloatware on your atrix. if you want it off of your phone, using a program like root explorer, instead of deleting the bloat file, just rename the extension to .bak. this way, it keeps it on your phone so that when an OTA comes down the pipe, all you have to do is go change all those file extensions back to .apk and youll be good to go. if you delete any necessary system files, youll either have to find those files out in the wild, or sbf back to stock.

You could just use Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the bloatware, instead of renaming things.
The SBF has been flashed by a few already using the new RSD 5.0
I think there was some discussion over on XDA about the updates and it may not be like the droids. Can't remember though.

I'm gonna stay away from that until a proven method is out. It's some Russian based method and there are reports of bricked devices.

Bloatware on the Atrix is easily removed in the applications menu and there is no need to delete from the systems folder or rename files. I doubt bloatware deleted this way would be in issue since you don't need root access to get rid of it.

Some people consider everything motoblur to be bloat and that can't be easily removed.

Ok, here's a question...if we can't do an OTA update for whatever reason, can we still do an update via and SBF or will there not necessarily be an SBF? I'm just wondering if there will be a way to get Gingerbread on the device without having it pushed via OTA?

youre absolutely right about titanium. i always forget about freezing. and yeah, as long as the new rsd got leaked out as well, we should be good

Whoah! Hold on now! What do you mean by "bloatware"? I deleted all the Att stuff, NFS demo, and yellow pages app on day one, but only because I had the choice and no root was needed. Are you telling me this will affect eligibility?

I forgot that the atrix lets you delete the at&t stuff. Whatever the phone allows you delete non-rooted should be fine. Anything that you have to root to get rid of probably needs to be restored before OTA updating

bloatware = motoblur
A lot of people, myself included, hate motoblur with a passion. The only way to truly get rid of motoblur is to manipulate the system files. What you did was remove the bloatware that was removeable with a simple uninstall. This is something for the people that want to get rid of the motoblur UI, or atleast as much as they can. What you did in no way will affect anything. In short if they allow you to uninstall then it's fine. If you have to go out of your way to tinker with /system files or other areas that require root access then you are taking a risk.
You have nothing to worry about. :)
