The previous GSM Nexus, the Galaxy Nexus, only comes with 16GB of internal storage, and it has a MASSIVE custom software/"hacker" community. If you get a Nexus 4, you'll have more custom goodies to play with than you'll be able to go through.

I have multiple custom ROMs, kernels, backups, and other modifications on my 16GB Galaxy Nexus, and I have never run out of space. So unless you're going to save many many gigs of music or movies on your phone, the storage will be enough for the average "hacker".

Fastboot oem unlock. :)

sorry if i feel dumb, what that actually meant, new to android scene

It's the code you type into command prompt/terminal to unlock the bootloader. This has the effect of letting you, the end user, control what packages/images are on your device--signed or unsigned.

This is what make a Nexus great. Most other phones are designed to stop you from installing custom software, but with the Nexus there is actually a built in command to let you do so.

Yup. You say three little words and the world is your oyster, relatively speaking :p.

In case the OP might not have understood what this means, basically that's all you need to type to unlock and root this device. Therefore its the MOST hackable android phone out. :-)

Yup. For more info about unlocking, see my general Nexus hacking guides in my signature (Don't Panic/Kraken).

It's got a locked bootloader? Now granted its not locked as in HTC locked or Motorola locked where the fastboot command is disabled, and it only takes a few seconds but why is a locked bootloader on a nexus device? My n7 was locked too. Annoying because if you decide to root after you get your stuff set up, it wipes it and you have to start over.

My captivate had no such locked bootloader and it was a carrier phone. What's the deal?

for security!!! Locked bootloader is much more secure than unlocked.

at the same time they give simple commands to unlock it who ever wanted it to be unlocked.

everyone is happy.

It has an unlockable bootloader. Very few phones--if any--come with an unlocked bootloader out of the box.

but if you somehow mistype the command, wont it go in a bootloop and may be restart problems as no removable battery?

My issue is this: you get your phone, your happy on stock, then you decide you want to root. Well guess what? Your loosing everything.

This very situation has happened now with my flyer, vivid, and nexus 7. Enlight of this I might just unlock the bl as soon as i get it.

Yeah it's better than using warranty voiding tools on HTCs website (and htc devices say "relocked" if you relock the bootloader in the bootloader menu), but hate loosing all my data.
