Will phones with Kitkat 4.4 still be able to perform in 4-5 years time?

Some phones on the market still come with 4.4 kitkat and I was wondering, if I was to get a phone like that, would it still be able to work with different apps in 4-5 years time or will most apps created in the future not be optimized for it? I'm not exactly sure how operating systems work and why there is a new operating system every year.. I just want to be able to get the most out of my phone for a good number of years and not have to upgrade. Should I even be thinking like that or is it expected of consumers to swap phones every 2-3 years?

Thank you!

Good phones from two years ago are NOT useless.
But if you want to keep your phone 4-5 years, you definitely should buy one that is running the latest OS version.

Thanks for the advice! Do you think I should also aim to get a phone with a a removable battery if I want it to last that long? That does limit my choices quite a bit but if it would make my phone last...

I would highly recommend that, once 2.5 hits the battery won't be able to hold much of a charge at all
