Was the email addressed directly to you, or was it a broadcast to all their smartphone customers? My understanding was that the only way they know that you are tethering is by the amount of data you're using.

What program/version did you use to tether? Was it wireless tether or PDAnet, or something else? From most other posters, they say as long as the usage is low they never got an email. Personally, I have tethered once for a few MB.

To the other person, AT&T hasn't sent their users any tethering mass emails.

if you root, you can use hotspot and tether (depending on the ROM you use). you can use pdanet without root. I am rooted and on a 2gig month plan, I use hospot about 100MB - 200MB a month and i have not been contacted by att. Use it until they threaten to force you into a higher tiered plan then just stop using if they do threaten. worst case scenario you pay an extra 20 bucks for one month and just go in and change your account back afterward. Might have to deal with att customer service over the phone though, this is almost worth not even attempting it.

i have the unlimited data plan with a rooted inspire 4g. i used around 3 gb that month, like i normally do.
i tethered in school around 50 mb a day because the wifi was not working. i got email from att saying something about tethering and if you dont stop, you will be put on the tether plan.

i used the wifi hotspot feature. i always use 3-5 gb a month and never received an email or text saying something about tethering. i do think its software based and att is spying. i used 200 mb today and no text or email.
