I want to know, after a new model phone comes out from samsung will we continue to get updates? I owned a verizon droid 2 global and after about a year they left me with a crappy update on a crappy phone. A new model had come out from motorola and all focus was on it. Im really hoping for the next two years samsung really will keep updates going on this phone. Apple has updates for all of their models and that is the only reason i still consider apple/iphones a good phone. Has their track record been good with updates? Will the s2 get jelly bean? That may foreshadow the rest of the two years if it does not receive it.

No one can tell you or guarantee you that Samsung will support any device for any prolonged period of time. It doesn't worry me because I can easily go to our FANTASTIC third party developers and root my phone for a LONG TIME! If updates and not wanting to root your device are your priority and interest, I would suggest you get an iphone for said reasons. If tweaking and tinkering your device with rooting doesn't scare you, then go with an Android device.

I would say next to having a nexus..... Owning a galaxy S series is the best gamble you could make as far as updates....that's the reason I went with the S3.....it's Samsungs best phone, once a year.... And they seem to keep it updated as long as the hardware can handle it.... To me it's the phone to have on android.... You can go with a razr HD but you really don't know what you will get going forward out of Moto.. Razr HD XL 4 weeks later? They promise JB this year.... They promised ICS Early on the OG Razr and uuuh.. Yea...

Sent from my GS3....

Galaxy 2 most likely will get Jelly Bean, but I fear that it will probably be the last update it gets. I hope Samsung updates this phone for the next two years atleast also. I mean by the way Samsung is advertising the phone over iPhone 5 it's still their flagship phone and they should provide us service also. What scares me is Samsung already has the Note 2 announced and most likely a GS4 will be announced in 2013 or 2014 meaning the S3 will no longer be a flagship. Then one of the new Nexus devices could be from Samsung. A good way to get updates will to stick with the Nexus line. Maybe that's what I will do if my S3 ever breaks after my two year contract is over and warranty ends (That's if the next Nexus can prove itself to be amazing)

The way I see it GB > ICS > JB is like iOS4 > iOS5 > iOS6. Apple devices now get updates for a longer time, but they weren't always that way. I understand it's harder for Android phones to do that because of the number of different OEM's out there. Unlike Apple which is a closed system, with only a few phones with identical hardware, Android is an open system with each OEM releasing double or triple the amount of phones Apple releases a year. Now that all the hardware are getting similar for Android (SoC, RAM, Screen Resolution) I hope that the updates will come for all phones equally.

It may not be good now, but didn't Google acquire Motorola? Maybe Motorola will be able to push updates to their phones due to their connection.

I would guess no. The reason for this is because the galaxy s series is a very popular series for them.. I think more than any of their other phones.

So we're good. :)

due to the power of the s3, it will be supported by 3rd party rom dev's for years to come, as someone said. apps dont even touch the sides yet in terms of cpu use so the s3 is gona have a very long life i think software wise ;)
global s3, UK. Ask me anything and ill reply even if its just an intelligent (or crazy) guess ;)

I had a Droid X before this phone. I didn't root it or replace the ROM until it was out of warranty. I will probably do the same thing with this phone if necessary. That way development will continue even if it's not from Samsung. ;-)
