A vista laptop would make a great paperweight, but not too much more. I bought a brand new laptop, with great specs that I thought had hardware problems because it was just so bad, but it turns out that it was vista that made it almost unusable. I ended up dropping down to xp ultimate(by Johnny) / Ubuntu dual boot, and now it's an incredible machine that I never have a problem with. I don't have any experience with Windows 7, but I wouldn't touch vista with a ten foot pole wearing several pairs of surgical gloves under a hazmat suit.

nobody I know has had a good experience with vista either.

Windows 7 for sure. Performs much better, has a more intuitive interface, and some well thought out features. That said, get a Mac ;)

Windows Vista has some good vises (notice I said some). As for Windows 7, by far the best that Windows has put out to date. The interface is smooth and fast. Vista to me seemed more like a test mule as to what 7 should be.
As for a Mac... I'd say it depends on what you need your laptop for.
I work right next door to an Apple store, and I've seen more dissatisfied people going into that store with their Macs on a daily basis than anything. I'd like to say it's mostly due to user error, but then again...

I've been running Windows 7 since it was beta and have to say I am finally impressed with an OS from Microsoft. I think they finally got it right. It's about time, huh?

If you're buying a brand new machine then go with Win7. Vista is a heap of doggy doo doo...

If you're thinking of upgrading from Vista, do so ASAP.

If you're thinking of upgrading from XP, wait until SP1 is out at least then do so.

If you're running Linux, then why on earth would you want to go back to Windows? ;)

Phil.

i'm impressed that Windows 7 gets sticky notes.. sheesh Apple didn't get sticky notes till Mac OS 7.5.. Steve Jobs! :PP

I've been running Win 7 Ultimate for about two weeks now and have to agree with the general consensus here. It leaves Vista in the dust.
