Wireless Tether Speeds

Looking for some insight as to why my wireless tether speeds are so slow compared to other methods.

I'm in a solid LTE area.
If I use the fixed speed test app on my phone or the servers at speakeasy.net, I get from 12-20 down and 2-4 up.
Same can be said if I use The wired tether program from a laptop or desktop connected via USB or if I use the free baked in WiFi Hotspot included with the phone.

Now, I use the wireless tether program, I get 2-4 down and 1-3 up consistently.
No access control turned on, I am using WEP and the laptop next to it is the only one sharing it. I even tried three different channels.

Any other ideas?

it might possibly be the app, its coded a certain way,or it may not support LTE just yet.

That is kinda what I am thinking. I wasn't sure if it was just me or the masses.
I'm sure plenty of people are using it...
I'll ask the developer!

Try using a WPA2 encryption. If you're trying to communicate over 802.11n the WEP encryption severely slows things down and WPA2 is the preferred encryption for said protocol anyways.

I use "wifi tether" with the green wifi icon to wireless tether and have not noticed a loss of performance with it in use.

I'll give that a shot...but that being said, I've used WEP on the baked in "free until May 15th" app and have gotten the speeds I should be getting.

Will post back in a bit.

Thanks for the heads up...but that wasn't it.
Removing any security (only for a few minutes) and it's still the same.
Same notebook, same browser, both speedtest.net and speakeasy.net/speedtest to the same server at both sites as before.

I noticed the same thing, I'm guessing (just a guess) the mobile hotspot app caps speeds. Maybe try EasyTether or something, just for comparison's sake? I'd do it, but I'm not in a 4G zone right now.

Wireless Tether has worked great for me

That is the one I'm using now that I'm rooted, and that is what this thread is about.
The speeds just aren't there.

I can use EasyTether via USB OR I can use the free WiFi hotspot that comes with the phone (that will be charge for use after May 15) and the speeds are what I expect in LTE coverage.

It's capped at/around 3MB down, no matter what server I use to test, encryption or no encryption, regardless of channel.

Same phone, same spot on my desk, within seconds of turning off wireless tether, I can try speedtest.net (the app or the site) and speakeasy and get withing 5% of each other (much faster than wireless tether's results).

Using EasyTether (Paid for this before I rooted the phone) I was getting the same speeds on two different desktops and a laptop.

12 to 20 down and 2-4 up. Depending on signal strength.

With Wireless tether, it jumps to 3....then just sits there....just like it's being governed.

FWIW I'm rooted running wireless tether also and can't push my download speeds much past 1 mb with full 4g coverage...

what's your secret to getting 3mb down?

edit: I'm watching my network speeds as I'm downloading video files, not referring to "speed testing" websites or apps, but actual download speeds seem to hang at 1-1.3mb tops

I am relying on speed test websites by speedtest.net and speakeasy.net.
The same sites I've always used...and used when I first got the phone.
Fine point indeed...when I have time I'll actually download a large file and see what happens.

Are your videos compressed? Normally, speed test sites and apps use MP3 files because of their high compression.

Try actual files, not tests, and let me know what your speeds look like. My files are .mp4 and I also will grab .mp3 or .zip/.rar and download a few at a time to see what my incoming data speeds hit (I'm on a mac with istat menus)

I've ran speed tests and had anywhere from 1-30mb results but when I'm actually downloading files I've never passed 2mb.

Just installed barnacle I'll let you know those speeds too

I'm on the perfect storm 1.3 / xlean 1.2 I don't think our roms differing matters though, seems bamf is pretty stable too

Just downloaded a couple different MP3s off Amazon...
1.6 down
Speed test via site right before and after...same thing. 4 down, 7 up.
Regardless...at this point, who knows...it could be coming to an end.
I can honestly say it's nice to have, but I've used it twice since the phone was new.
For work...stuck at a location with the Internet down. Needed to VPN in and get a config file from the office.

Not sure if barnacle is meant for this phone, barely got 150 kb/s down on 1 file heh

Ok that sounds about right, I'm usually around 1.3mb with a few files downloading. Just funny to me how a speed "test" might say you have a download speed of 14mb/s but you will never actually download a file at 14mb/s, ah that would be nice~
