Wireless Tether?

I just bought the Samsung Epic and it came with Froyo 2.2.1 installed. I want to get the ability to be a wireless hot spot so that I can connect my ipad. I have seen instructions on how to root the phone and update to beta versions of froyo 2.2 but my question is this:

Given my phone came with Froyo 2.2 installed, do I need to root the phone to access wireless tethering? Please let me know.. I am a novice.

Yes you do need to root your phone. Or pay sprint 30 a month.
