Is there any way for me to turn my Evo into a mobile hotspot w/o being rooted if not and when I do root what should I try out to get the wireless going? I refuse to pay Sprint any more money than I have to!

Without being rooted, nor paying Sprint for the hotspot fees, you can only tether your phone using either USB or Bluetooth, not wireless.

You can try apps such as PDANet or EasyTether, both will let you use USB tether without root. However, they will require a one-time fee to the app developer for full internet access (HTTPS is blocked in tethering mode).


If you must use wireless tethering, and don't want to pay Sprint for the privilege, you have to root your phone, after which there's a number of free apps you can try, such as Wireless Tether, WiFi Tethering, or Barnacle Wifi Tether.
