Wonky Auto brightness

Anyone else notice how jerky the auto brightness is in lower light? We're talking constant steps up and down as if it can't tell what level it should be. I ended turning mine off because of how weird it was.

It seems quite directional, so if you have a window behind you and it sees it it's going to go bright. If it sees your chest it goes back to dim.

Very very annoying. Last time I had this issue was with the HTC 10 and I returned it because of it. Pixel 2 is HTC made and same thing occurs. In 2017 we can't master auto brightness on a phone. Sigh... trying to live with it because I love the Pixel 2.

Yep. That's when I noticed it, my back to a window and the phone facing the window.

Been seeing this on my old Nexus devices all the way up to the Nexus 6P. Even my Nexus 7 (2nd Gen) and Moto X2 had it. I never had the OG Pixels so I don't know if they had that. I wonder if this is a stock Android thing....

It is just totally broken in (my) Pixel 2 non-XL. If I set brightness at 100 with auto brightness enabled, it will never get dark in a pitch black room. It'll only dim down to maybe 50. If I put brightness at 10 with auto brightness enabled, it'll stay that dim. It doesn't ever adjust as it should to changes in light / environment. It adjusts, but very wonky and not properly. I previously bought Lux for my old HTC 10 that did the same thing and it helped to a certain degree. But I remember the auto brightness still was wonky. May try it on the Pixel 2. But a cell phone in 2017 should be able to properly handle brightness on its own. Major issue for me that probably will prevent me from keeping the phone.

What you're describing is different. That's actually how auto brightness has worked on Android since Lollipop.

Ah, thanks for this link! Explains a lot and makes sense I guess. I still prefer a full on auto-brightness feature. But setting brightness now to say 60 helps prevent the constant fluctuations. Will keep playing around with it.

Yeah the adaptive brightness is odd. Sometimes it just doesn't work as well as regular auto brightness.
