To begin....this is my first thread :)

ok...haven't all motorola (or at least most) phones had a locked bootloader?? I mean, i understand everyone being annoyed with that, however wont someone be unlocking this bootloader? Wasn't the bionic locked? I believe that people have found a way around that?

Am I wrong to think that a way to work around the locked bootloader will surface?

Give it time and people will find a way to unlock it. If I had the knowledge and time and money to do it I would work on it as sol. As I could.

I think the atrix and photon bootloaders were unlocked simply by dumb luck. Someone may find the same loophole for the razr. Or maybe a new method will be discovered since moto will officially unlock the international version.

It'd be great if it happened, but you shouldn't hold your breath.

didn't the bionic have an unlocked bootloader weeks after people had it in their hands?

All things aside...if i knew that there is going to be a way to unlock the bootloader in the not so distant future then there really isn't anything to hold anyone back.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

It's incouraging to see a custom rom already available for the Bionic, which I think is going to be it's closeset cousin software and hardware wise. I have a feeling that hole will still produce fish for us Razr adopters...

I know it is a ways off....but i'm looking to the first ICS rom for the razr lol

I'm guessing it will be a custom rom that makes it out first before the official update makes it out...damn big red tape (pun intended)

it is an unlock-able bootloader that the carrier will be able to give permission to unlock. won't someone just leak the password or what ever it takes to unlock it?

Sorry guys but do not count on it at all. Developers have been trying to unlock Motorola encrypted bootloaders since the original Motorola Droid X and have not been able to do so. The only Moto devices that have got unlocked is from Project Cheesecake (a project were people scanned motorolas servers for developer software). What you can do though, is bootstrap to clockwork and flash ROMs from there. But it is not as safe as the original way if you get a soft brick. Since the international versions are in fact getting unlocked this does provide a new angle for developers to go, but I would not get my hopes up. If you want a phone with an unlocked bootloader why not just wait for the Nexus? It will be out in November (most likely the 17th with pre orders starting the 10th) and it will have ICS with no MotoBlur.

Ok....so I didn't realize that there is much of a difference. So we will be able to flash a rom with the locked bootloader however this will be more dangerous. Does this mean that it will be easier to soft brick and more difficult from?

The fact that Motorola is offering non Verizon razrs an unlocked method does offer some hope....right?

I have also always wondered this....can you hard brick a phone? And if that term isn't correct by that I mean can I make it unrecoverable?

We will be able to flash a rom, but will have to use the Moto kernel. There is always an element of risk when flashing, but very rarely can you completely brick your phone to the point where you can't get it back, unless you are tinkering with the radio files...

I don't care about custom roms, I just want root for free wi-fi. Is that too much to ask for?

Maybe I'll have to invest in the laptop dock if root isn't possible...
